NIV Pr-Ecc Preface (1977)

THIS preliminary translation of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes is part of the New International Version of The Holy Bible. In 1973 the NIV New Testament appeared. Since then, work has been continuing on the Old Testament, which is scheduled for publication in 1978.

The New International Version is neither a paraphrase nor a revision of any previous translation, but a new translation made directly from the original languages. In the Old Testament the Masoretic Text (the traditional Hebrew text) has been generally followed, except where the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Septuagint and other ancient versions, variant manuscript readings and internal evidence have led to corrections in the Masoretic Text.

A transdenominational effort, the New International Version involves over a hundred Biblical scholars from the English- speaking world. All of them are committed to the belief that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. Their aim is to make a translation that is clear and idiomatic, contemporary but not quickly dated, dignified but not stilted. They are therefore seeking simplicity of expression together with sensitive regard for the connotation and sound of the words chosen. Literary stylists work with them in pursuit of this aim.

Where there is uncertainty about the wording of the original text or its precise meaning, footnotes call attention to this. Although sectional headings are inserted in the translation to facilitate reference, they are not an official part of the text. In the translation itself, brackets are occasionally used to indicate words or phrases supplied for clarification.
